the japanese white-eye or mejiro (zosterops japonicus) is a small passerine bird native to much of east asia. named for the distinct white ring around their eyes, these small birds are also introduced (with mixed success) throughout the world, and have an established population in hawaii. traditionally, they were kept as a cage bird. they are omnivorous, and feed on fruit, nectar, insects, and seeds. these social birds are often found in mixed flocks, socializing with other species.
